Oval Sorter essential for Docdata’s small parcel shipping

Docdata, a leading full-service e-commerce company in the Netherlands, takes care of fulfillment logistics for web shops of V&D, Zalando, and other companies. The growth of e-commerce led to an increase in the number of small parcels that Docdata ships every day. As Docdata moved into a new distribution center in Waalwijk, it was time to look for a solution to handle this increase.

In 2011 the increase in number of small parcels caused the Equinox Line Sorter in use until that time, to be no longer efficient. Equinox replaced it with an Oval Sorter (aka bomb bay sorter or split tray sorter) with a capacity of 6,000 trays per hour. Parcels and large envelopes are dropped into one of the 29 roll cages directly underneath the trays or in one of the four special buffer chutes. The new sorter came into operation in 2012.

Attractive ROI

Some electrical parts from the Line Sorter were reused for the Oval Sorter, as was the infeed line from the mezzanine to the installation. After an upgrade, the existing controls and software could be used to run the Oval Sorter without any problems. This made the ROI for the replacement investment very attractive. Easy to operate Parcels and envelopes are placed on an infeed line, running from a mezzanine to the ground floor. The items then move on to a pocket belt, where a single operator adjusts them manually in the right position if necessary.

Sometimes items are not transported to the pocket belt via the infeed line; they are brought to the operator in a trolley. The operator takes them out of the trolley and places the parcels directly on the pocket belt. The products are then automatically scanned and inducted onto the sorter trays. The tray opens above the right destination and the parcel drops into the roll cage underneath. When a roll cage is full, the destination is dynamically re-allocated. An operator takes the full roll cage away and puts an empty one in its place. The Oval Sorter has allowed Docdata to handle the growing number of small parcels efficiently and fast. Besides, the Oval Sorter is very easy to operate and maintain.

Dimensions & weight

The weight of the parcels and envelopes varies from 50 gram to 2 kg. Maximum product dimensions are 380 x 260 x 100 and minimum dimensions
are 100 x 100 x 2 (L x W x H mm.).

“Equinox´s strength lies in its ability to help customers with their thought process and to come up with solutions at an affordable price level.”
